What a fabulous treat I have for your lingerie collection and a true little treasure to cherish for many years to come. A welcome addition to your vintage lingerie boudoir!

The color is what I describe as COFFEE BEAN WITH IVORY LACE (color may vary from monitor to monitor), and created in 100% nylon. This has CHIFFON OVER SILKY SMOOTH NYLON SHEATH LINING. Vintage items are rarely flawless and most have normal to little wear, minor picks/pulls in areas or a small age discoloration spot or two etc. This particular beautiful piece has no rips or stains. There are some pencil thin repairs made under each arm. Minor picks present.

At Main Street Corset Shop

Is the modern male embarrassed about walking into a corseteria? No he isn’t—or at least, not as “shocked” as his father would have been, according to the Hollywood Maxwell Company, operators of a corset and bra shop on Disneyland’s Main Street.
Surprising as it may seem to some, it’s the teenagers who are most affected by the exhibit of old and new in corsets, bras, and petticoats. The younger sets’ reaction is usually one of giggles as they look at the small models in various stages of dress.
Through a system of looking glasses in the corseteria on Main Street, the visitor can by slowly turning his head see the models change from the full dress of the turn of the century into their underclothes—corsets and pantaloons. In the modern sequence, the model switches from an evening dress into bra and petticoat.
Many men hesitate to enter the shop—especially older gentlemen accompanied by their wives. It’s the older women who seem to be most anxious to shade their husbands from any “risque” experience.
But it’s the older generation of men who are the most polite—they invariably remove their hats upon entering the store!
The fathers and mothers of recent years seem to take the whole thing in stride—while the older women often are guilty of a bit of giggling, as are the teenagers.
The 10 to 12 year olds, especially the girls, are particularly appreciative and interested in the old time furnishings of the 1900 period in the store.
Hollywood Maxwell’s experience seems to lend credence to the belief that Americans are becoming more “liberal” through the years in their thoughts on such formerly “taboo” subjects.

Vintage Lingerie BABY DOLL Babydoll Nightgown. History Lesson In Vintage Lingerie

WONDER WHERE the term babydoll came from? A baby doll (the name is sometimes two words, baby doll, and sometimes hyphenated, baby-doll or babydoll) is a short to the crotch, sometimes a little longer, sometimes a bit shorter, sometimes sleeveless, loose fitting nightgown. Typically 2 layers with chiffon over nylon lining. With frilly lace or bows extras. Sometimes designed with an empire waist (fitted at the ribcage) and poofy skirt.

The gown is often sold as a set with matching panties (as shown with the white vintage Tosca babydoll and panty set) , as a typical babydoll is short enough that underwear is visible if worn. Styles of the same general length but not intended to emphasize sex appeal are sometimes called shortie nightgowns.

I sell a wide variety of vintage Babydoll negligees from the 1950s to the early 1980s and are now collectible vintage items. Some babydolls open in front and resemble a robe or peignoir as well.

So why "BABYDOLL"? It is said the name was popularized by the 1956 movie Baby Doll starring Carroll Baker, which essentially marked the beginning of the enduring popularity of this sweet little style.

Starring Karl Malden as a failing, middle-aged Mississippi cotton gin owner, Carroll Baker as his uneducated teenage wife, nicknamed "Baby Doll", and Eli Wallach as a successful Italian-American businessman who takes over most of the local cotton-gin business.

While the costume design was not nominated, the film is credited with both the name and originating the popularity of the babydoll nightgown, which derives from the costume worn by Baker's character.
