Vintage Lingerie BABY DOLL Babydoll Nightgown. History Lesson In Vintage Lingerie

WONDER WHERE the term babydoll came from? A baby doll (the name is sometimes two words, baby doll, and sometimes hyphenated, baby-doll or babydoll) is a short to the crotch, sometimes a little longer, sometimes a bit shorter, sometimes sleeveless, loose fitting nightgown. Typically 2 layers with chiffon over nylon lining. With frilly lace or bows extras. Sometimes designed with an empire waist (fitted at the ribcage) and poofy skirt.

The gown is often sold as a set with matching panties (as shown with the white vintage Tosca babydoll and panty set) , as a typical babydoll is short enough that underwear is visible if worn. Styles of the same general length but not intended to emphasize sex appeal are sometimes called shortie nightgowns.

I sell a wide variety of vintage Babydoll negligees from the 1950s to the early 1980s and are now collectible vintage items. Some babydolls open in front and resemble a robe or peignoir as well.

So why "BABYDOLL"? It is said the name was popularized by the 1956 movie Baby Doll starring Carroll Baker, which essentially marked the beginning of the enduring popularity of this sweet little style.

Starring Karl Malden as a failing, middle-aged Mississippi cotton gin owner, Carroll Baker as his uneducated teenage wife, nicknamed "Baby Doll", and Eli Wallach as a successful Italian-American businessman who takes over most of the local cotton-gin business.

While the costume design was not nominated, the film is credited with both the name and originating the popularity of the babydoll nightgown, which derives from the costume worn by Baker's character.

Has A HUGE MASSIVE FLOWING FULL SWEEP SHEER CHIFFON PLEATED GOWN.. with the most silkiest softest pink nylon I have ever laid my hand's on underneath. I LOVE these *ILLUSION* DRAMATIC NOIR GOWNS that are absolutely heartbreaking. This exquisite masterpiece is straight out of France. From what research I have found on Valisere, they still currently make lingerie, but nothing like this rare masterpiece. Apparently they are only doing foundations now. This gown is about the most gorgeous I have ever seen. With French Chantilly lace bodice, TWO BLACK SATIN RIBBONS that braid through the bodice to adjust the empire waist, and MASSIVE FLOWING SHEER SKIRT THAT EXPLODES TO THE FLOOR of over 300 INCHES AROUND, Holy Toledo! Ohhhhhh the skirt, the skirt! Is all PLEATS that really create a dramatic flowing sweeping effect.. just unreal.

The color is what I describe as PINK, GREEN & BLUE creating an AMAZING RAINBOW EFFECT (color may vary from monitor to monitor), and created in 100% nylon. This has solid pink pastel lining, with SHEER RAINBOW CHIFFON OVERLAY! Unreal PINK SATIN piping trim around neckline and arm holes, and matching ORIGINAL SATIN BELT is included that can be worn with or without this gown. This is braided through the holes and around the back and tied around the front CREATING THE *DRAMA DRAPING HOLLYWOOD STYLE GOWN WATERFALL BACK*.

This IS NEW WITHOUT TAGS/NEW OLD STOCK, THE INSIDE TAGS ARE STILL CRISP! No tears or holes, only on the back down at hemline is a thin pencil line spot of white residue, and most likely will come out in the wash (cannot even hardly see it), but wanted to mention it. I did not wash this since the tags are still crisp and new. Vintage items are rarely flawless and most have normal to little wear, minor picks/pulls in areas or a small age discoloration spot or two etc.

Vintage Lingerie Lover, Collector, Seller.. A True Obsession

This obsession of mine, vintage lingerie. Why, how, and you may ask, why in the world vintage lingerie? Well let me explain. This passion of mine started when I was a little girl. When Mommy was cooking, cleaning or drinking her Pepsi's with peanuts in it (that's a whole other story), doing her ironing, watching As the World Turns, guess what I was doing? I would be in her drawers, going through all her glorious frilly chiffon nighties. Mom, you never knew I did this did you? Speaking of Mom, that's her in the lovely red and black chiffon nighty, and don't I look loverly all upclose, pale and huge forehead and all..NOT (I must have been around 3 years old), and Mom about 21 or so? Sorry Mom, giving away our ages here *big evil grin*. Check out that scary-arse clown behind me.

This obsession stuck for years. After working for over 20 years as an office manager in a dental firm, I had enough of oral fixation so I quit my "day job" to bring my chiffon fixation to others, selling off my passion, my collections, my vintage lingerie on eBay. So, folks, that is how it started.
